Prior to beginning treatment, a full evaluation of your child's current communication strengths and weaknesses is recommended. Evaluations include using formal standardized assessments, a thorough parent interview/case history review, and observations made during the evaluation.
Speech therapy addresses how your child produces a variety of speech sounds (i.e.; consonants and vowels) in words. Therapy may include targeting single sound errors (articulation), patterns of sound errors (phonology) and/or the motor planning/motor movements necessary to produce speech sounds (childhood apraxia of speech & dysarthria). Additionally, speech therapy addresses speech disturbances related to repeating sounds and words or "getting stuck" on words (stuttering).
Language therapy addresses how well your child understands language (receptive language) and how well they use language to communicate with others (expressive and pragmatic language). Therapy may include targeting vocabulary, grammar, communicating basic wants/needs, social rules/skills, answering a variety of questions, following directions, or telling stories.
